Dysconcious Audism: The Impacts and Solutions for Our Daily Lives
Time & Location
About the Event
As Deaf, we are exposed to an enormous amount of discrimination and trauma in our daily lives. This trauma is caused by the impacts of audism, and the systemic hold that hearing culture has over Deaf culture. As someone who is Deaf, late-deafened specifically, I have seen and experienced more than my fair share of audism, too; however, dysconcious audism is the audism that we internalize in ourselves because of the pervasivness of audism in our worlds. It impacts our daily lives and choices.
For example, ASL may not be the language you learned at birth. In fact, studies show you if you are Deaf and sign, you likely learned to sign later in life. So, as a Deaf individual you may ask a hearing interpreter their sign for something over asking another Deaf native signer. This is a form of internalized audism, or dysconcious audism. The thoughts, feelings and unconcious behaviors that hearing culture and/or hearing ways of doing things are superior to Deaf culture and Deaf Way.
This workshop will focus on ways we can positively change our worlds, lessen audism, and lessen the audism that has become pervasive in the Deaf Community. The goal is to bring about awareness of how our own behaviors of audism are impacting our lives, and the lives of those around us, including the Deaf Community.
By the end of this workshop, participants can expect to:
- Recognize how their own unconcious beliefs have impacted their behaviors
- Understand where these beliefs come from and how to stop perpetuating the cycle
- Learn how to have discussions about behaviors in the community
- Recognize how other people's dysconcious audism is affecting their behavior to avoid conflict
- and so much more!
This workshop is open for ASL level 3 and beyond students, is open for all Deaf and HOH individuals, Deaf Interpreters and Hearing ASL interpreters. (Please note that this workshop is for enrichment purposes only, as CEU's will not be given out). For students who need to attend Deaf events, I will be happy to sign off on any paperwork necessary attesting to your participation at this event.
